Common Butterflies II

Psyche. Leptosia nina
 
This is a small bright white butterfly with a black border on the apex of its forewing. The only prominent mark is a big black spot on the apical region of its forewing. The underside is dull white speckled with pale grey scales and faint green striations. It has a wingspan of 35-50 mm.

                     Three-Spot Grass Yellow. Eurema blanda
 
This is a bright yellow butterfly. On the upper side, the anterior part of forewing has a broad outer black border. The underside of both the wings are speckled with more or less well-defined markings.  On the cell of the forewing, there are three spots which are the identifying characteristic of this species. It has a wingspan of 40-50 mm.

  Common Mormon. Papilio polytes

It is a jet-black butterfly with a row of white spots along the middle part of the hindwing. The margin of the forewing also has a series of smaller white spots. The female has three forms – form cyrus, form stichius, form romulus. The form cyrus resembles the male in colouration with some indistinct red spots on the hind wing. The forms stichius and romulus mimic the Common Rose and the Crimson Rose, respectively, but have black bodies. It has a wingspan of 90- 100 mm.

Common Crow. Euploea core
The common crow is a glossy – black butterfly with brown undersides. On both the forewings and hindwings there are a series of subterminal and terminal white spots. On the forewing the spots in the subterminal region are more or less oval and curved inwards and those of the terminal region are often incomplete. On the hindwing the spots in the subterminal region are elongated and those of the terminal region are conical.  It has a wingspan of 80- 90 mm.



Plain Tiger. Danaus chrysippus
It is a medium-sized butterfly with tawny (light brown to brownish-orange coloured) wings. The upperside is brighter and richer than the underside. The apical half of the forewing is black with a white band. The hindwing has three black spots in the center. The wings are bordered in black and outlined with semicircular white spots.
It has a wingspan of about 7-8 cm.
